Envy according to the Oxford Dictionary is the feeling of wanting to be in the same situation as somebody else; the feeling of wanting something that somebody else has.
Now envy comes in two ways. Envy can either be positive or it can be negative.
The Positive Side of Envy
When you envy someone’s lifestyle or character, it motivates and drives you to strive hard to be like that person. It purges you to work harder to achieve what the person you’re envying has. Envy can be a very good thing as it positively purges you to be a better person.
The Negative Side of Envy
This is when you have negative feelings for a person because of what the person has achieved or can do. When you feel less of a person because you don’t have things another person has, the negative side of envy shows.
In my own opinion, I see envy as more of a negative character as it causes you to think of causing harm someone who you feel inferior to.
Envy at times leads an individual to depression, constant anger and sadness.
Causes of envy
There are many reasons why people get envious of another person but I will just list a few here
- Low self esteem
- Comparison attitude etc
How to overcome Envy
- Be satisfied with whatever you have.
- Do not compare yourself with any other person, you are unique
- Work more on yourself
- Get something doing, don’t be idle
In summary, if you would at all envy, let it be a character or attribute in a person that you will envy and not material things.
